Hey, frost mages!
Don’t say we never did nothin’ for ya. Lhivera has done some interesting testing based on information about (gasp!) warlock pets. It turns out that warlocks do more damage if they force their imps to cast by macroing the imp’s spell with their main nuke. Lhivera wondered if this would work for frost mages and the answer is yes: he noticed a 27% increase in his own pet’s DPS, which he estimates could boost his raid DPS by 3.8-5.5%. Not too shabby!
To take advantage of it, you’ll need to change your frostbolt to this following macro:
#showtooltip Frostbolt
/cast Frostbolt
/use Waterbolt
Unlike /petattack, this command will not cause your pet to stopcasting and start over with every keypress (something I personally discovered doing Vezax hard mode, heh). So macro up, frost mages, and make Splashy work for you.
(And don’t tell Ais I helped you out. Getting punched by a gnome isn’t fun.)

I just respec’d into the arcane spec you’d recommended for levelling, since I get sick of coming against frost-immune targets.

I was a long time Frost lover, I came back to Arcane though because I’m a former 3 minute mage.

Does something like this work for for Mirror Image as well? I have noticed a serious delay in the time I start casting a spell and the time my mirrors start casting (and they always cast frostbolt. I’ve never seen them cast fire or polymorph, even back in the day).
Mirror images aren’t pets and cannot be controlled. They will DPS whatever they want, pull the boss while you’re still clearing trash, and generally stand around like idiots. There is nothing you can do to make them smarter.
They only have two spells in their arsenal: frostbolt and fireblast. They don’t account for very much of our DPS — they’re really better used to mitigate threat.
I just like seeing an army of my clones around. I am an army of one.

#showtooltip Frostbolt

/console Sound_EnableSFX 0

/petattack
This is what I use personally, and it does slightly more then the one you suggest, but in the end the same job is done.

Whether or not the macro results in a DPS gain depends on how often you spam the button. If you are simply queuing frostbolts one after the other, you will NOT see a DPS gain. If you are mashing the button repeatedly, however, you will probably see a DPS gain. See the link above for more details.
