Mage Addon Wonkiness
Editor’s note: Scorchio now works as of 3.3.3. Hooray!
Since I have long recommended Scorchio, I’ve had more than a few mages who use it ask me if I’ve noticed that it isn’t working post 3.3. Yes, yes, I have. The problem with it is that Scorchio2 tracks the procs based on your combat log, not on your aura gained, and for whatever reason Hot Streak and Missile Barrage are no longer recorded there. This means if you’re not watching your buff bar, you’ll miss your procs. The author has opted to wait and see if Blizzard is addressing this issue before overhauling the code for the addon, which means those of us who use it need to look elsewhere for solutions.
Since I was already using PowerAuras, I opted to just make a couple of alerts when I get the procs I need. PowerAuras can be a bit of a resource hog, however, so a very lightweight solution (and the one Ais is currently running with) is installing NeedToKnow to track your procs. Both addons work by detecting the aura you receive when you gain the proc and so will work even with the current combat log issues.
I still recommend Scorchio, however, for the ease of tracking your stacks of Arcane Blast, your Living Bombs, the length of time left on your mirror images, and whether the 5% crit debuff is active on your target: all of these uses are still functional and Scorchio is very easy to set up. I’m content to run with a mishmash of addons to achieve what I want for a little while, at least.
I hope you’re all enjoying the new content! I, for one, have missed massive trash pulls: doing 16k damage on them last night was ridiculously fun. We’ll see how I feel about them in a few weeks, though. Cheers!

Scorchio is updated already. It works.
Um, no, it doesn’t. It has been updated, but the current version (updated yesterday) does not track Hot Streak or Missile Barrage. I tested it this morning before writing the article, and Scorchio2 hasn’t been updated since then. The author him/herself has said changes won’t be made to the code until Blizzard addresses whether HS/MB procs not being in the combat log is a bug or working as intended.
Thanks for the info in Scorchio2. I spent a good 20 minutes or so trying to figure out how to get it to track my HS procs. NeedToKnow in Curse isn’t updated for 3.3 though. Is it fully compatible or is it gonna flood my screen with .lua errors? Thanks in advance por la ayuda.
I’ve been using it with no problems whatsoever. I just use it for Hot Streak/Missile Barrage procs, as well as Black Magic! Very useful. Just make sure you spell Missile right. >_>
Another solution is to set up Satrina Buff Frames with a frame that’s just mage proc buffs (hot streak, missile barrage, brain freeze), placed wherever’s convenient for you.
I like SBF for a lot of other things too, so it’s not an extra chunk of memory for me.
thanks, i had apparently without realising it started watching my buff bar. you miss a lot of the fight that way
Because I decided to combine an upgrade to Win7 the same week of the patch, I haven’t had a chance to notice this.
Everything seems to be mostly working at this point and I’m hoping to finally get into Icecrown tomorrow, so THANK YOU!
It was driving me insane on Tuesday. I thought I hadn’t updated something or that something was broken.
I set up Power Aura’s Wednesday to give me an aura when it procced. I’ve played with it the past couple nights and I’m getting used to it.
Just out of pure curiosity what other things do you display with power aura’s?
Icy Veins, Arcane Power, Trinket(s), Black Magic, Heroism, Power Infusion. Fight-specific buffs/debuffs (like toasty fire on Hodir).
[...] Scorchio? Having some problems with it in patch 3.3? You’re not alone. Empowered Fire has some workarounds for [...]
I use MageAlert, downloadable via wowmatrix.
For instance, for Hot Streak it says ‘Hot streak!’ as a soundfile when you gain the proc.
Saves you having to check purely visual aids like Scorchio2.
Not to be snarky, but do you have applicable links to anything but Wowmatrix? I’ve had a long hatred with wowmatrix and I do not wish to advertise anyone using it.
I mainly use my PowerAuras to track Icy Veins and Heroism. You can set them to show how much time is left on each buff, so I can time a evocation on the last second of Heroism and retain the haste advantage through the whole evocation. All my other on-use cooldowns are tracked on a small bar under my character and are all on a macro so I can click one button to use any of the on-use items that are available at the time.

Hasn’t been updated in ages, but probably still gets the job done (I’ve never used it though).

Magefever is another option for the class’s procs. It’s ugly looking but working fine on live. (Hint, grab that slider and push it waaay down.)
I used to use MageFever, actually, thanks for the reminder!
Sorry to comment again, but Mage Nuggets, available at http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/mage-nuggets.aspx, has been updated to show the Missile Barrage proc.
I use both MageAlert and MageFever. MA gives you audio alerts while MF gives visual. I like using both of them at the same time as MA will clue me in if I’m paying attention to what’s going on rather than what procs, and MF helps me remember I still haven’t fired off that Missile Barrage I got just a second ago.
They both work great by themselves, I just prefer using them together.
